Lyall Bay

Lyall Bay is a surf spot located in Wellington, New Zealand, on the south side of the Rongotai isthmus, about 6 kilometers from the city center. The beach is around 1500 meters long with a sandy bottom and is known for its main break called The Wall, a left-hander breaking off a break wall at the eastern end near the airport. The rest of the beach offers average beach breaks. There is also a bombora offshore that only breaks on a large swell and is rarely surfed. The spot works on all tides and is suitable for all levels, but it is important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Swell is mostly from the south, and north winds are common. Due to the close proximity of the South Island, the amount of swell that reaches Wellington can be limited, so when Lyall Bay is working, other spots like Wairarapa may have bigger waves. The beach can get crowded, especially in summer, and there is little localism as many people surf here. Always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. Facilities like toilets, showers, and parking are available, and public transport connects the area to the rest of Wellington. Lyall Bay is home to two surf lifesaving clubs, Lyall Bay Surf Lifesaving Club and Maranui Surf Lifesaving Club, which help with water safety.
