Pipes is a popular surf spot located in San Diego County, California. It is part of the San Elijo State Beach, situated between Cardiff and Encinitas. The name ‘Pipes’ is derived from the large concrete pipes that used to be prominent on the beach, serving as a landmark for surfers. However, these pipes have since been buried due to beach erosion and are no longer visible. To reach Pipes, surfers can take the Birmingham Drive exit off Interstate 5, head west, and then turn south on San Elijo Avenue. Parking is available in the San Elijo State Beach parking lot, which is a paid lot, or on the nearby residential streets, which are free but often crowded. The best swell direction for this spot is southwest and west, while the optimal wind direction is northeast and east. Respect the local crew.
