The Wreck is a surf spot located in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. This spot is named after the remains of the SS Wollongbar, a ship that sank during a cyclone in 1922 and is now lodged just offshore. The shipwreck is approximately 87 meters long and runs parallel to the beach, with the rudder tiller visible on the eastern end and the boilers exposed at low tide. The Wreck is situated about 30 meters off the shore of Belongil Beach and approximately 60 meters from the Main Beach Car Park. The surf spot is best surfed on a mid-high tide with winds coming from the west to southeast and a north/northeast swell ranging from 3 to 6 feet. The waves here provide both left and right breaks, with a fast, hollow, and powerful right-hander breaking on the sandbank about 10 meters in front of the shipwreck. The bottom consists of sand and rocks, and the wave length is less than 50 meters. The Wreck is known for its regional classic quality and is suitable for surfers of all levels, although it is important to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match your surfing level. The spot can be crowded with a few surfers, and it’s crucial to follow surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots. Parking is available at the Fish Heads car park or the Byron Bay Pool car park across the road from the Beach Hotel, or at Main Beach with a walk north to the mini break wall. Nearby surf spots include Belongil, The Pass, Wategos Beach, Tallow Beach, and Bullies. Respect the locals. Tides have a significant impact on wave quality at certain surf spots like The Wreck, causing conditions to vary throughout the tidal cycle. As the tide moves between high and low, the water depth over the seabed changes, affecting how the waves break. At these spots, high tide usually produce softer, slower waves, while low tide can generate faster, steeper waves. Some spots have specific tide stages when they work best, offering optimal conditions only at certain times of the day.
